Glossary

The Tic watch glossary helps our customers understand the various terms used on our website.

Ana-Dig
This is a watch with both an analogue and digital display.

Automatic Watches
These watches are self winding mechanical watches.  They have a rotor that includes a weight, which swings backwards and forwards with every movement of the wrist and winds the mainspring.

Bracelet
A metal strap made of steel, gold or metal which goes around the wrist.

Case
This is the outer shell that houses the moving parts of the watch.

Chronograph
A stop watch function built into a wrist watch.

Dial
The faces of an analogue watch which usually displays the hour indicators.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
A digital display where the numbers are displayed in a liquid layer sandwiched between two clear crystals.

Mechanical Watches
Use a balancing wheel to measure time and a mainspring for power.  You need to wind these particular watches by hand.

Movement
This is the way in which the watch keeps time, for example mechanical, automatic, quartz, kinetic or solar.

Quartz Watches
These watches use a quartz crystal to measure time and a battery for power. You do not need to wind these watches up.

Solar Quartz Watches
They use a quartz crystal.  Any light is absorbed through the crystal and dial, and a solar cell converts the light into energy to power the watch.

Strap
This is usually a leather or plastic band which holds the watch on the wrist.

Water Resistance
A measure of how well a watch will resist intrusion of moisture.
